The 28th Annual Memorial Service for the Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn was held on January 28, 2008 in St. Petersburg, Florida.
On Jan. 28, 1980, the Blackthorn sank and resulted in the loss of 23 Coast Guardsman. A monument was dedicated Jan. 28, 1981, and is located at the Sunshine Skyway Bridge north end rest area.
